In this guide, I’ll share some of my favorite hikes in the Arthur’s Pass area. It’s a stunning alpine region in the heart of New Zealand’s Southern Alps, known for its dramatic mountain landscapes, incredible trails, and diverse wildlife.
Through Arthur’s Pass by Train
During my three-month trip to New Zealand, I visited Arthur’s Pass twice. The first time was a brief stop when I took the TranzAlpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth. I hadn’t planned anything in advance, so I didn’t know I would come back again later in my trip. The train made a short stop in Arthur’s Pass before continuing west. It was a really beautiful train ride.

3 days with car in Arthur’s Pass
Later in my travels, I decided to rent a car and drive back to Arthur’s Pass for a longer stay. This time, I had a chance to explore some of the beautiful trails and breathtaking mountains. I stayed at the Mountain House Hostel, which was a great spot to be close to nature.
Arthur’s Pass Village was probably the smallest place I stayed in—just two restaurants and a tiny (and slightly pricey) shop. To save money, I bought supplies beforehand to have most of what I needed for my three days in the area.

My favorite hikes in the area
Arthur’s Pass has so many incredible hikes. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t that great when I visited, so I didn’t get to do some of the most famous ones like Avalanche Peak or Bealey Spur Track. But I did hike the Temple Basin Track, and it was really cool. I can also really recommend Otira Valley Track.
Here’s a little more information about some of the best trails in the area:
1. Temple Bassin Track
Temple Basin Track is a must-do hike in Arthur’s Pass, offering stunning alpine views, rugged terrain, and a rewarding climb to the Temple Basin ski area. I hiked up to the hut at the top, where I could take a break, enjoy the breathtaking surroundings, and relax out of the cold wind.

2. Otira Valley Track
This is an easier alpine walk with epic views of Mount Rolleston, perfect for spotting kea and experiencing the rugged landscape without a major climb. I loved this trek because of the beautiful surroundings and the more easy terrain.

3. Avalanche Peak Track
A challenging but rewarding climb to one of the best viewpoints in the park. Expect steep terrain, rocky ridges, and breathtaking panoramic views.
4. Bealey Spur Track
A moderate hike through beech forest leading to stunning views over the Waimakariri River and surrounding mountains. A great option for a less strenuous adventure.
5. Devil’s Punchbowl Track
A short but steep walk to an impressive 131-meter waterfall. Perfect for a quick and scenic stop in Arthur’s Pass.
